Blooming saguaro cactus


I did NOT know that Saguaro cactus bloom in the spring. I thought they just stood there with their arms out............

apparently they bloom in May and June, this is a pic I snagged off the internet

  1. I'll have to dig out a photograph I took of a saghauro bloom. I took it with infrared film. They're hard to photograph because they are night bloomers, and the flowers are on the top. So you do early morning with arms that swoop low. This guy must have had a ladder. I've seen that.

  2. Those flowers turn into a bright red fruit. I've seen the Papago women harvesting them. They use a long pole to knock the fruit off, put them in their basket, and take them home. Not sure what they did with them, jelly, maybe.

  3. Jelly is right...and it's illeagle for anyone white person to collect the fruit. Jelly is pretty good.
