winter headquarters

Arrived safe and sound to Apache Junction Az. Traffic was light and trip uneventful. Passed Lary and Sharon Lozier just south of Wickenburg Az. They were stopped for a rest stop or something? Nice RV par (pictures don't do much justice to RV parks), friendly folks who helped me with a jack problem. Ready to hunker down for 5 months or so...

Rainstorm from Union pass

One of the pictures from last summer patrols in the Union pass area. Looking towards Green river lakes and "bend of the river". Another nice day in Hurricane Utah today, supposed to be even nicer in Arizona.

Really old tree

Photo doesn't do much justice to this pic of an old "cedar" type tree. Near Zion park, it's been hit by lots of strikes of lightning over the year as evidenced by the vertical charred strip in the tree . Getting ready to head for Arizona Saturday morning, we're going to a seafood buffet tomorrow night in Mesquite with Sutherlands and Schmidts to celebrate my birthday...

Contrails

Snagged this photo off the internet, kind of a "different" photo. Laid low today and did some prep work for the trip Saturday, went over to Sutherlands' and visited with them for a while

Virgin river canyon

Never get tired of traveling through the Virgin river canyon between St. George Ut and Mesquite Nev. Went with Sutherlands yesterday to dine at a restaurant in Mesquite (one of the gamblin joints), was very good and very inexpensive... I should have rolled the window down on this pic, lots of reflection....I'll rationalize and say that adds character

Ringneck pheasant

Took this rather shoddy pic of a ringneck pheasant the other day near Zion park. First one I'd seen in some time. I apologize for yesterday's attempt at posting that newspaper article. From my computer I couldn't enlarge it without it going blurry. One of the links on this blob is Judi Meyer's blog, she posted it on hers and you can actually read it. Life goes on

Old case I worked in 1976

Judi Meyer was kind enough to dig this up for me, it's an old drowning I worked in 1976 in Half moon lake. Then the only technology for searching for a drowning victim in cold deep water was a case of beer and some boats with hooks that they drug through the water. Now days they have a technology called side band sonar which will scan the bottom of a lake and show you a picture of what's there. Even after 35 years this fellow would still look about like the day he went in the water, there are no trash fish to chew him up or other elements that would deteriorate his physical stature. No, the lake doesn't move with currents, he would be in a semi frozen state (super cold water). The summer slipped away from us and we didn't get to use the technology (still developing), next summer we'll probably go out and send the scan unit down and look for this fellow. If and when we do that I'll make sure some kind of a news release is done so the public will know...

Not sure if this picture of the article will show up or not???

Just seein if you're paying attention

if you know someone, or have been
affected by someone, who needs a punch in the face! People who need a
punch in the face affect the lives of many. There is still no known cure
for somebody who needs a punch in the face, except a punch in the face,
... but we can raise awareness!

More Zion

Looking southeast towards Kanab Utah from just eat of Zion park. The camera doesn't do much justice to the deep canyon below. Off shopping and visit some friends today, we're down to 10 days before we begin spooling up and heading to Apache Junction Az. We're kind of anxious to go over the bypass bridge at Hoover dam. It's opening to traffic this week. Still have to wind through Boulder city Nev. before going over the bridge though, millions of trucks and cars. I'll delegate Debi to take any pictures going over the bridge, I'd hate to drive off that sucker...

Older than the hills

This old truck is parked near the east entrance of Zion park. Stopped and looked at some "touristy" things yesterday during our loop from Hurricane Ut. through Kanab Utah and back thru Zion park. Rained all night here, catching a break right now but it's supposed to be wet all week.

Really really old sandstone

Took this pic on a day trip today near Zion park. They claim these sandstone layered items were formed about 120 million years ago. The picture doesn't do justice to how pretty these things are. Wow, 120 million years ago, I was just a kid...

Phoenix raceway

It's good to be the King!

Bob Sutherland looks quite "svelt" (sp) as we toured Tai Pan (knick knack store). The weather down here doesn't get much better than this, mid 80's daytime and low 50's nighttime. The natives around here say that it gets really cold in December and January though, good reason to go further south.

Somewhere on earth

Kind of a neat pic. I captured off the net. I have no idea where it's at?? Beautiful fall weather (still very warm) hre in friendly downtown Hurricane Utah. We'll be headed further south in just over 2 weeks.

No roadrunners

I've looked high and low down here and can't find a roadrunner to photograph. Guess this one I snagged off the internet will have to do for NOW....

Cigar guy

This stupid photo has been reproduced so many times it's hard to see. This picture went viral last week after the guy showed up in the crowd where Tiger Woods was playing golf. The picture of the guy overshadowed the main theme of the day which was Tiger Woods. Isn't technology wonderful??

Veg-gas

Wow, hard to believe we've been here nearly 2 weeks, if all goes well we'll be headed through Las Vegas and up towards Wickenburg Az. in under 3 weeks. There's an RV park in Golden Valley, Az that we want to check out on the way to our ultimate destination of Mesa/Apache junction Arizona. Warm but not hot here today (Hurricane Utah), just right!!

More search and rescue

Another pic of the command post from last summer's search in the Boulder area that turned tragic. These guys do a great job.

Geicko Gecko?

This guy was sunning himself on the wall behind the trailer, from head to toe he must be a foot long. He didn't stay long as the outside temp was near 100 deg f.

Twichell canyon fire

Shot this before we got to Beaver Utah day before yesterday, the pic doesn't do justice to the size of the fire (over 14000 acres). That ridge in the lower left of the frame is a freshly burned ridge. Oh and the smoke smell for about the next 50 miles was horrid. Supposed to be cloudy and rainy in the next few days, hopefully it will squelch that inferno. Started by lightning in July...
